Mission Valley Choral Society begins practices for spring 2026 concerts


Practices begin for the Mission Valley Choral Society Spring Concerts on Thursday, January 29, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Polson. Spring concerts are scheduled for the weekend of April 18-19, 2026.


Director Cathy Gillhouse has selected a varied program which includes Duke Ellington’s “Don’t Get Around Much Any More,” “Defying Gravity” from the musical “Wicked,” “Bye Bye, Blackbird” and traditional spiritual “Every Time I Feel the Spirit.”

  1. Every time I Feel the Spirit, arr. Wm Dawson, traditional spiritual.
  2. Home of My Heart (SSA) very nice piece for women.
  3. Praise To the Lord, arr. by Hugo Distler,  up-beat and modern arrangement of trad. hymn.  
  4. Don’t Get Around Much Any More, by Duke Ellington, pop song from 1940’s to be sung as a part of a medley with next piece. 
  5. I Can’t Give You Anything but Love, Baby, arr. by Jay Althouse, 1928 pop to be sung as a part of a pop medley with above song.
  6. Johnny Comes Marching Home, song from the Civil War Era, good arrangement with powerful ending.
  7. Sing Dem Herrn, by Michael Praetorius, sung in easy German, canon in 5 parts. Up beat
  8. Bye Bye, Blackbird, arr. by J. Althouse, another 1920s pop, fun.
  9. Ching a Ring Chaw, adapted by Aaron Copland, high- spirited post-spiritual style with imitation of banjo in vocal parts. 
  10. 10.Hallelujah! by Leanard Cohen, sacred/pop piece from 1980’s and ‘90s, featured in Shrek.
  11. 11.Defying Gravity from Wicked (choir started this last year)
  12. 12.On Eagles Wings, arr. by Mark Hayes, well-known modern sacred piece, nice arrangement.
  13. 13.Shut De Do, by Randy Stonehill, Jamaican style piece with percussion.
